Kizomba is an Angolan terminology from the linguistic expression Kimbundo, which means "party".
The expression Kizomba, as a dance was born in Angola, in the 80s in Luanda, after the big musical influences of Zouk (from the Antilles islands), with the introduction of the rithmical boxes called drum-machines and after all the contests which invaded Angola. It is relevant to say that the big parties between friends already in the 60s were called "Kizombadas", since at this time it didn´t exist kizomba as dance or musical expression.
Already in the 50s/60s people were Dancing Semba and other traditional dances in Angola. Many other dance styles from other continents were also danced, since Angola and the rest of Africa received the influency from many other cultures after the entryofsettlersinAfrica around the XIV and XV century. This resulted in a fusion between the African rithyms with the way of dancing in couples imported from the european society, being this kind of couple dance realized in the noble courts, as for example, the valse, mazurca, polca..., taken not only by the lords but also by their servants and even by some slaves.
This european influences together with the influences that came from south America, as for example Argentina and Cuba (Tango and Merengue), changed the way people danced in the "Kizombadas".
Kizomba is an extremely beautiful and sensual dance, being also explosive and contagious, it has conquered the world in the last few years as a sound that stays in the ear and as a dance that seduces our souls. Kizomba is for many of the very experienced latin dancers a breathe of fresh air, bringing something new and exciting, and perfect for anyone who wishes to enter the world of Dancing due to its smoothness and easy basic steps, allowing any beginner to gradually evolve to more complex figures, and even more important allowing a beginner to start enjoying the pleasure of social dancing a lot sooner than any other couple dance. According to our Knowledge we can state for sure, that Kizomba has spreaded from Lissabon (Capital of Kizomba in Europe), Portugal, to Denmark ;) , England, France, Spain, Poland, Finland, Belgium, Sweden, Belarus, Lithuania, Egypt, Switzerland, Belgrade, Canada and the USA.
Kizomba is a dance that allows the couple, to interpret the music to which they are dancing to, and according to the intimacy of the couple, it can become an extremely close dance with slow and sensual movements, requiring great leading skills and complicity between man and woman, or a open position dance with faster steps, footwork and tricks. In either cases, dancing Kizomba will provide a warm and unique experience that you will want to repeat again and again...
Semba is an angolan ballroom dance. Danced in couples and in open position, it has very distinctive steps from the gentleman, followed by the ladies in very large steps, where the juggling and acrobacy of the gentleman counts very much for the level of improvisation. Semba characterizes itself as a dance of "passadas" . It was not a ritual or warrior dance, as many others in Angola, but a dance of joy and fun mainly in big parties, as the "Kizombadas" .
